During the 75th edition of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, held from 10 July to 25 August at various stunning locations throughout the city, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy over 60 theatrical, musical, dance, folklore, and other events over the festival’s 47 days.
Following the grand opening on 11 July, the first major concert will feature two-time Grammy winner Jordi Savall and his ensemble Hespèrion XXI. The musical programme will conclude with an Opera Gala, a concert showcasing a selection of the finest opera arias, performed by one of today’s greatest opera stars, soprano Sonya Yoncheva, as well as Malta’s golden tenor Joseph Calleja, and Ante Jerkunica, one of the most sought-after basses on the international scene, accompanied by the Croatian Radiotelevision Symphony Orchestra.
The centrepiece of this year’s theatrical programme includes three major premieres. The first is a co-production between the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and the Marin Držić Theatre – the iconic Coffee House by Goldoni staged at Držić Square. Two premieres by the Festival Drama Ensemble will also be presented: Vojnović’s Equinox at a new festival location in Posat and Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which will be performed on Lokrum Island.
As for the folklore segment of the programme, visitors will have the chance to enjoy traditional dances and music with performances by the Linđo Folklore Ensemble and the LADO Ensemble. There will also be a rich art exhibition programme, featuring exhibitions by renowned artists such as Mara Bratoš and Toni Franović.
The World Music and Jazz Cycle has been launched as well, namely with the goal of audience development and following the example of major global classical music festivals. The lineup includes performances by the JM Jazz World Orchestra under the artistic direction of Luis Bonilla, the Cristina Aguilera Flamenco Trio with intoxicating flamenco rhythms, Dubrovnik’s chanson master Ibrica Jusić, and the ethnomusicological project “Bërbili (Nightingale) – Forgotten Songs of the Arbanasi People from Zadar” by Dina Bušić and Melita Ivković.
The musical programme at the Palace will conclude with a charity concert entitled “Youth for Youth”, featuring the best young Croatian musicians, namely pianist Jan Niković and guitarist Lovro Peretić, performing with chamber ensembles from the Luka Sorkočević Art School.
